Relics of the True Cross: Holy Cross, Co Tipperary

by | May 23, 2012 | Hauntings & Mysteries, Landmarks & Buildings, Religious Sites, Tipperary

This 800-year old monastary was named after a relic of the True Cross, first brought here in 1233 with additional relics were added in the 1970s) It then became a place of medieval pilgrimage; representing a defense of the Catholic faith, and its struggle for freedom.  In the 1600s the Abbey fell into ruins and was abandoned until being named a National Monument in 1880.  In the 1960’s it was restored to is original state, as it remains today. As it is an active parish and school, you are free to attend mass, or make a quiet visit during the week. In 2011, the relics were stolen and missing for 3 months before being recovered by local police.

In addition to a partially restored cloister, the abbey showcases examples of Irish Gothic craftsmanship, a religious gift shop, 14th century murals, and a medieval sedilia (stone seats).
