Beehive Tomb: Reynella, Co Westmeath

by | May 30, 2012 | Animals, Graves, Religious Sites, Westmeath

It’s always good to be prepared, and for Adolphus Cooke, that meant building his father’s mausoleum in the shape of a beehive. He believed dad would be reincarnated as a bee and had his tomb designed with a hole in the top so he could fly out in his next life. Also buried in the tomb is the family nurse… no one is sure if she planned to go the insect route as well. Adolphus believed he’d be back as a fox, so became known for the network of foxholes he dug around his expansive property.

The cemetery surrounds the ruins of St John the Baptist church which is in off the road and overgrown in the forest.
