A Folly at the Centre of Ireland: Co Westmeath

by | Mar 20, 2020 | Landmarks & Buildings, Monuments, Westmeath

Standing in the center of a field in County Westmeath, a single pillar sits upon a hill in a field. The plaque attached says, “This Pier Built 1769.”

Although clearly built to attract attention, it’s original purpose isn’t fully known. Some suggest the local landowner built it to see his lands in all directions… or to denote the geographic center of Ireland — which is actually 9 miles (14.5km) southwest… or to mark the start of a historic steeple chase.
