Uninterrupted Time at Rathgall Hillfort: Shillelagh, Co Wicklow

Entry to the innermost ‘ring’ at the Ring of Rath Hill Top Fort

While not a place you would necessarily make a destination in itself, the Rathgall Hillfort in Wicklow (just west of Tullow, Carlow) is a lovely stop if you find yourself nearby.

While excavations have taken place here, the site now sits on its peak awaiting any travelers who happen to search it out (or take a wrong turn and discover it, like we did).

It’s likely you’ll be the only visitors to this 4 ringed hill fort, which will give you plenty of time to really explore and examine it.  The outer earth and stone rings are thought to date back to before the Bronze Age, while the innermost dry stone circle is believed to be Medieval in age.

My girls were sure the faeries had made this place their own, and just a tiny bit of online research suggests they may be correct as many tales are told about the ‘Ring of the Rath‘.
