Dominating the Cork City skyline is the clock tower of St. Anne’s church in Shandon.
From a distance it may look like just another fine Irish church, but St. Anne’s is a bit more special. Visitors are encouraged to climb the old stone staircase to the top of the tower, and experience a view of the city like no other. Along the way, you can stop to play a tune to the people of Cork City, on the 18th century church bells.
I spent almost my entire life in Cork city, and didn’t get to experience this marvel until I returned as a tourist. It’s the places like these, which are not completely overrun with sightseers, that are the real treasures of Ireland.
