Gougane Barra, Ireland’s first forest park, is secreted away in a glacial valley. Surrounded by the Sheehy Mountains the former monastic site is a popular venue for Irish weddings. A small Romanesque-style oratory sits on an island in the lake, reflected romantically in the still waters. Over 1,000 acres of woods and mountains contain walking trails and a driving route. It is pronounced Goo-gan-bar-AH.
