Just about 5km north of Sligo, you can enter an ancient world of tombs, stone circles, and cairns. There are over 30 monuments in Carrowmore, all within about 2 square miles, with a nice visitor centre to help you understand the history of each.
The monuments range from about 5500 to 6500 years old, and range from small, crumbling tombs to massive stone circles and cairns, such as Queen Maeve’s Cairn.
If you enjoy exploring megalithic sites, this is a must – dedicate at least a couple hours to rambling among the stones, and have decent walking shoes. While the OPW does a good job of maintaining the site, some of the grass and hills are a bit rough to walk on.
There are a couple more circles on the other side of the road, so don’t miss them! And say hello to the friendly horses in the next field.
