Overlooking Lough Swilly at Burt Castle: Burt, Co Donegal

by | Jan 25, 2013 | Castles, Donegal, Landmarks & Buildings, Memorable Experiences, Scenic Spots

Burt Castle is a hidden gem that many people pass by without visiting. There is no road leading to it and it is actually now located on private farmland – however, this means that when you visit, you are likely to have the whole place to yourself. You can park your car on the road and either politely ask the farmer for permission or discreetly climb the gate and walk up the field to the beautiful castle.

Built in the 16th century, it commands incredible views over Lough Swilly and you can easily imagine its strategic importance back through the centuries. It is very well preserved and you can climb up onto the 2nd floor and let your imagination decide how it used to look. A fascinating stop, and best combined with Grianan an Aileach just down the road.
