Sitting on a small jut of land, at the edge of Lough Lein on the grounds of the Killarney Lake Hotel, is the 12th century McCarthy Mór castle ruins.
Twice I took a walk to the ruins from the hotel, the second time to enjoy it without the howling winds keeping me company.
Like many castles in Ireland, not much is left of the old ruins today. But like all other Irish castles, there is something unique and inspiring about standing in, and exploring, the strongholds of our ancestors.
