Kilclooney Dolmen: Kilclooney Beg, Co Donegal

by | Jun 19, 2012 | Ancient Places, Donegal, Graves, Landmarks & Buildings, Nature & Gardens

Just northwest of Ardara, take a 20 minute drive to Kilclooney Beg. Park near St. Conal’s church (there is a dolmen centre), there is a small farmhouse nearby – the dolmen is in the boglands behind the farmhouse.

Be sure to wear shoes that will stay up to boggy conditions! Please stay to the right, and close the gate behind you. Go through the gate, and about 10 minutes of walking will get you there.

As close as it is to a village, the peat fields around the dolmen make it isolated and lonely, very primeval. You can’t get right up to it – there are ditches dug around it to prevent that. However, it is nonetheless very impressive, and dates from about 3500 BCE.

There is a second, smaller dolmen behind the first.
