Layde Church is a small, ruined church near Cushendall. It has a delightful high cross and a keyhole cross, old and worn, as well as several other monuments and graves on a steep hill next to the sea.
It’s a little difficult to find – in Cushendall, drive passed the grocery store and park to the right of the main road. There’s a turn off to the left, with a little sign. You can park in a small gravel lot and walk to the church. After that, walk the cliff path for a delightful view of the islands and even Scotland, no matter what the weather. It’s quiet, overgrown, and peaceful.
Cushendall itself makes an excellent base for exploring the county. We stayed at Riverside B&B and enjoyed it immensely – good food and music at Johnny Joe’s, and excellent take-away at the Half Door.
