Reviving History at Fort Camden: Crosshaven, Co Cork

by | Jun 27, 2012 | Ancient Places, Cork, Landmarks & Buildings

Camden Fort Meagher is situated on Rams Head at the Eastern end of Crosshaven, home of the World’s oldest Yacht Club. The Fort derives it name from the Earl of Camden, who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in 1795 and it was renamed Meagher in 1938 when it was handed over to the Irish state having been under British occupation until then. Fortifications date back to 1550 and consists of 45 acres and is 65% underground in a labyrinth of tunnels and chambers.

The Fort was one of only seven installations worldwide to house the Brennan Torpedo, the worlds first guided missile. Having laid idle for over 21 years recent Community efforts with support from Cork County Council and FAS have led to a huge reversal in fortunes. Internationally recognised as being one of the finest remaining examples of a classical Coastal Artillery Fort in the World.
