Donagh Cross: Carndonagh, Co Donegal

by | Jun 2, 2012 | Ancient Places, Donegal, Religious Sites

Carndonagh is a town on the Inishowen 100 driving route and well worth a visit if you are at all interested in Celtic Crosses. We came across this place by accident, and I was thrilled to find the 7th century Donagh Celtic Cross, also known as St. Patrick’s Cross.

It has two pillars, one on either side, with carved Celtic knotwork faces on them, strangely reminiscent of the faces on the Isle of Lewis chess pieces found in Scotland.
